In 1992, the movie Living
in Bondage sparked sporadic excitement within some circles when the realization
dawned that an industry might just have been born. Nollywood quickly took off
like the case a baby born in a manger and of low beginning. It was far cry from
the norm; Nigerian movies now on mere Home Video Format, the lowest of all
lowest in audio and visual recording. People sniffed at them, scorned even that
the once respected and loved movie industry, which collapsed few years earlier,
has now become a place for anything-goes,
quantity substituted for quality. Such was the sorry case of the Nigerian Movie
industry later nomenclature as Nollywood.
However, rather than see the glass as half empty, Kenneth
Nnebue, Producer of the straight-to-video movie maker saw the opportunities
that lies in a potentially huge market left vacant by the likes of Moses Olaiya,
Yemi Alade and Hubert Ogunde’s 33mm cinematic film making exodus. The story
today in 2014 is different as we know it. Today, Nigerian Nollywood is the second
largest film industry in the world in number of annual film productions,
placing it ahead of the United States and behind only Indian cinema.
According to Wikipedia, “The
Nigerian film industry is worth NG₦853.9 billion (US$5.1 billion) as at 2014
and produces hundreds of home videos and films per annum. Nigerian cinema is
Africa's largest movie industry in terms of value and the number of movies
produced per year. Although Nigerian films have been produced since the 1960s,
the rise of affordable digital filming and editing technologies has stimulated
the country's film and video industry”.
With the rise of online marketing and video viewing,
Nollywood has seen significant increase especially in Africa with online store
shops of African movies similar to Netflix’s replica. A site like TVNolly for
instance is a good site for free and unlimited Nigerian, Ghanaian and African
Movies. The site is a revolutionary marketing and distribution channel that
boost viewership, profitability and growth for Nollywood movie industry, major

destination for African movies with Nigerian and Ghanaian movies. They provide
On-demand movie streaming services to audiences acros 150 countries around the

The days of Marketers dictating the tune for Producers and
Directors who should be in certain movies and how the movies should be shot is
simply fading out. With the new emerging market of online streaming and movie
viewing, the Nollywood business is becoming vastly competitive, openly qualitative
and immensely resplendent with potentials.
