It is no
gain-saying the pariah state the US intends to paint Russia in the midst of ongoing
Crimea imbroglio but China yesterday signed a landmark deal to buy Russian
natural gas worth about $400 billion, giving a boost to diplomatically isolated
President Vladimir Putin and expanding Moscow's ties with Asia.
“Putin was
in Shanghai for an Asian security conference where China's president called for
a new model of Asian security cooperation based on a regional group that
includes Russia and Iran and excludes the United States”, Yahoo News said. This
opens the question of a new world power rising and the deliberate exclusion of
the USA bore a grim and delicate picture of world security and peace.
The unusual
alliance, if anything is to go by the recent past indifferences of both nations,
Paik noted that "Russia, and Putin, can demonstrate it's not completely
isolated because of the Ukraine crisis. Russia has demonstrated that they have
a very reliable strategic partnership with China." The deal therefore,
does not only guarantee supply of natural gas to the world second largest
economy, it also guarantees strategic partnership in world politics, diplomacy
and economic shift.
Just recently,
Russia wasn’t invited to the G8 summit, alienating them from the franchise and
this would have been a blow, save for china’s gas initiative. “The contract
particularly important at a time when Europe has threatened to cut gas imports
and reduce its dependence on Russia because of the Ukraine crisis”, said
Alexander Lukin, a deputy head of the Russian Diplomatic Academy under the
country's Foreign Ministry, quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency.
"We
will be able to show to Europe that we have other customers," Lukin said.
A show of
power indeed it was by Russia and China and not only to Europe but to America.
