LEKKI TOLL GATE ILLEGAL, COURT SAYS

Lagos State Govt and LCC have lost the suit brought against them by Barrister Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa a civil rights Lawyer at the Federal High Court Lagos. In his suits, he prayed the court to interpret whether the imposition of tolls on the users of the bridge and residents of Lekki Scheme 1, Ikoyi, Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki and Epe communities, did not amount to a violation of their rights.

The Federal High Court Lagos delivered its judgement stating emphatically that the power of control of all navigable waterways in Nigeria, resides with the federal government.
The court held that since it was public funds that was used for building the bridge there was no basis for the public-private partnership arrangement which was adduced as the justification for toll collection on the bridge.

It is therefore criminal that the toll gate leading from Ikoyi into Lekki phase 1 or the one just after Four points Hotels and Orientals Hotel should continue tolling vehicles that pass through the road.

MikeAtols however expects the State Government to appeal to the Court of Appeal and go as far as the Supreme Court and Barrister Ebun has vowed also to get to the end of this too.
